The Devouring ~ UPDATE and depressing news, BUT THEN SOME GOOD NEWS, SORTA!!

HAPPY ALMOST FALL, EVERYONE!!
I know I've been absent for many a month, but THAT'S BECAUSE MY LAPTOP FINALLY CRAPPED OUT ON ME!! X< Until I can afford to replace it, I've been using my mother's laptop to do any posting of photos or things of the sort, but I hope you'll all bear with me and forgive the absence.
In current news, I got a new job a couple of months ago, looking for a better one, but I'm switching positions soon, so we'll see if things improve, which I'm sure they will. Also, today was Arts Beats & Eats, so I went with my lovely parents who graciously took me out for my favorite brussel sprouts at a restaurant I like, but unfortunately, it's upstairs above another restaurant and they have no lighting on the stairs, so upon leaving, I missed the last step and SPRAINED MY ANKLE!! Horrayyyyy....
Anyway, hospital, crutches, painkillers, sad end to an otherwise lovely day.
On the bright side, my dad won me a giant green inflatable alien at the strength bell thingy! We needed to use up some tickets and I wanted something resembling Zim. I love me some Jhonen, and he's been a current adoration of mine. Also, I ordered A TON OF BOOKS!! One of which will be the perfect read for this Autumn: The Merciless by Danielle Vega!! Super stoked about that!!
I'll try to post hauls and link to my reviews on Goodreads, maybe. ;3
In the spirit of horror books, I dedicated this set to The Devouring series by Simon Holt, a quote from which is underneath. The Vours have black eyes, but they weren't the initial inspiration behind this set.
And before anyone asks, yes, that's me. <3
LOVE TO YOU ALL!! <3 <3 <3

If Beggars Can't Be Choosers, Neither Can You

This was just a fun piece to make. It started with the standoff on the first shelf. The title is lyrics from a song by The Last Autumn.

If Beggars Can't Be Choosers, Neither Can You

In celebration of last October, (when I made this set), I wanted to do another darker set, but this time, more on the Gothic, delicate side of things. While this isn't really a fashion set, I think it says a lot about myself during the colder months. I love allowing the romantic side of me to come forth and be a dominating force in my wardrobe. You'll likely be seeing more of this from me again in the colder months. <3

Duality

This was my first attempt at one of these, but I love the amazing art made in the Polyvore community and I wanted to give it a try myself. It's not perfect by any means, but I liked the idea of it.

The Mortal Instruments, Elysium Review, and My Thoughts So Far on the Films of 2013 ~ WARNING: Very lengthy/color separated.

Hello lovelies! <(^-^)>

So, lately, since it's a dream of mine to finish my novel and become a published author, I've been reading a TON to keep myself inspired, and oh man, did I choose the right series to get me motivated.
The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare had been sitting upon my bookshelves for YEARS waiting for me to take the time to pick them up and plow through them. You can see my review on my Goodreads (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/326788367) for the first book, City of Bones, but let me just tell you here, it's fucking AWESOME! Cassandra Clare is a true literary genius in my eyes and I was definitely doing myself a disservice by not picking it up sooner, but it's one of those things that has just come into my life at the perfect time. This is even more true with the film coming to theaters this month and you already know who plans to see it opening day. THIS GIRL.
It would be wrong of me not to mention how psyched I am about this cast, in particular, a certain man by the name of Jamie Campbell Bower, who will be playing my favorite character (possibly from any book, ever) Jace Wayland. Bower was already on my radar since he played Anthony in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the T-shirt of which I'm currently wearing as I type this post. When I had first seen he was going to be playing Jace, the face from the book was still trying to form in my mind. I spent a moment getting to know both Jace and Bower and I found that, for me, they really were one in the same. Now, as I'm literally 90% of the way through City of Ashes, Bower has been Jace for me the whole way through, and, to be completely honest, I would never have been fully satisfied with the character if anyone else had been cast to play him, (to all you Alex Pettyfer fans out there).
On a side note, I actually am getting a tattoo to commemorate my love of the series when I get back from my trip to Tennessee this month. A friend of mine is training to be a tattoo artist, so I'd like her to slap the Angelic Power rune on the back of my neck (in all black, of course, to look like a Shadowhunter's).
As you can tell, I'm way too into this series. All this aside, I wanted to give my 2 cents on another film I recently saw.
Elysium was one of the many dystopian sci-fi films released this past year, the trailer of which  slapped me and said, "Lex Marie, you ARE going to see me." I was wide-eyed, heart-racingly eager to see it and asked my family (the only people I see movies with), "We're going, right?" every time it was brought up anywhere. Being a sucker for sci-fi as well, my father was just as determined to go, so I believe we went the day after it came out.
This film was directed by Neill Blomkamp, the same man behind District 9, which is one of my favorite films. However, there were some similarities I immediately noticed between the two films. Mainly, let's look at the unlikely heros'/martyrs' traits.:
~Seems almost completely self-centered and only concerned for their own well-being, both at the beginning and throughout the film.
~A physical plight compromises their lives and they are forced to act and, in doing so, occasionally does the right things for all the wrong reasons.
~Reluctantly decides to do the righteous thing at their expense at the very last minute, both with a child being a great driving force, though in D9, Wikus had even less of a choice.
~Lastly, a super small note, they're both trying to make it into the sky/space.
Another similarity between D9 and Elysium, that is honestly welcomed, was the fact they were both based on recognizable, real-life issues. D9 was based on the apartheid regime of District Six in South Africa, and Elysium showed current themes of immigration, health care, and class segregation.
While the films definitely were not the same by any means, the similarities were there, and, I felt, noticeable, throughout the whole film.
All of that aside, I really enjoyed Elysium and it held my full attention the whole time. I wanted more, though. I wanted a bigger, epic end scene. I wanted a better idea of just how the residents of Elysium were living in comparison with those left on Earth (we rarely see the residents or the lush settings). Why didn't Elysium go on to find another planet? I also honestly wished that there was more of an on-screen relationship between Max and Frey. While I got really attached to Max, despite his being a bit of an ass, Frey and her daughter just felt like side characters at best. I felt closer to the main antagonist, Jessica Delacourt, from whom we saw very little of her home life.
All in all, it was a great sci-fi movie, but again, I wanted more! To be totally honest, I would have preferred a D9 sequel, but I'm not turning my nose at Elysium. It was worth buying a ticket to see.
However, I have to note that, this year, dystopian/sci-fi films have been coming out with a beautiful vengeance, the only one I have missed out on being After Earth, (though I WILL see it). My first love this year was definitely Oblivion, which was another must-see for me and my family. I truly fell in love with the settings, Jack and Beech, and the plot itself. It was like every sci-fi film ever made compacted together, refined, and done really well. It totally made up for the lack of thrills I didn't get from The Host, which was still an interesting idea, but lacked substance, (and I'm still trying to get through the book, which my mom loved).
There was another that really stood out and pulled at my heartstrings this year. Pacific Rim impressed me more than any film thusfar, mainly because I really didn't expect to like it. I admit, I mainly went for MJR's popcorn. But I loved it. I really did. I think it might tie with Oblivion for best film I've seen this year so far, (no matter how average their Rotten Tomatoes ratings were). It was like if you took Godzilla, Transformers, Cloverfield, and Neon Genesis Evangelion, once again compiled them all together, and did them well and added a great plot with memorable characters. I thought everyone did an amazing job, but the characters that stood out to me most were definitely Stacker Pentecost (played by the talented and graceful Idris Elba), Dr. Newton Geiszler (played by Charlie Freakin' Day!), and, of course, Hannibal Chau (no matter how brief his moments on screen, damn right, there was impact). The film itself was also beautiful, with saturated, acid colors, beautiful CGI, and fantastic fighting scenes. My favorite? The freakin' "Boat Sword."
Another film I was not expecting to enjoy was The Wolverine, seeing as how I have managed to fall asleep during, literally, EVERY SINGLE X-MEN MOVIE I'VE EVER TRIED TO WATCH, but again, I was really impressed. I loved this film, though, I'll admit, the Japanese setting coupled with my new appreciation for Hugh Jackman was definitely a major factor in my newfound attention span.
I'd be crazy to forget the experience that was World War Z. I'd heard about the book years ago and had the intention of reading it, but I have far too many books to get through still, but this film was a phenomenal take on zombies. When a hoard is literally tripping over each other in a giant mass, building itself up like a wave in the illusion they're working together just to get to your throat, THAT is truly terrifying. And the idea that sick people would be avoided by these zombies and become the inspiration for a vaccine is brilliance.
I also really LOVED the comedy, This Is The End. I nearly died laughing in the theater, which I haven't done in a very long time, and if you need a good laugh, this is definitely the movie to turn to.
I saw Oz the Great and Powerful, which was a really cute family film with a lot of great, eye-catching visuals. I loved getting to see the backstory to how Oz became the wizard.
One film I did not enjoy, however, was Beautiful Creatures, which I'll be honest caused me to get rid of the book before reading it. I had lost all interest after being bored to death by the film itself.
Another lukewarm film was The Purge. It had SO MUCH POTENTIAL, and yet the execution was depressingly dull. One family? One rich family? That's all we get? In a time of literal utter craziness, and all we get is one WASP family's night in their own house? Go back to the drawing board and think about what you've done!
Anyway, I've blabbed enough about movies, but I'll end with this. So far, 2013 has been a great year for film, and it can only get better, with City of Bones, Catching Fire, and The World's End all coming out soon.

Loud Minds ~ Update #4

This is completely haphazard and was crazy fun to make. This is one of my few sets not related to fashion that I've made on Polyvore. As silly as it sounds, I do consider these to be one of my greatest forms of art.
I wanted to apologize for my absence and hope that these sets are enough to tide you all over for the time being. My house is in shambles and I still have yet to have my garage sale I promised myself this year. On top of that, I still have to write the lyrics for the second song with Drawing On Scars (Before Will gets tired of waiting and drops me!) and I'm also reading a lot more to keep myself motivated to finish my first novel, which I'm hoping will be complete before the end of the year. I started it back in 2009, before I graduated high school and it's still not done! But I have to say, reading more books has definitely helped inspire me and extend my vocabulary. While I can't tell you what happens in my story, I can tell you it's about vampires. Not the sparkly kind, either. Hopefully you will enjoy it when it's finally finished! ^-^
I'm currently reading The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, and OH MY GOD IS IT AMAZING. I literally can't put these books down. I started them about two weeks ago and I'm almost halfway through City of Ashes, and I take my time with books. I like to put myself in the shoes of the characters and imagine everything from their facial expressions to the inflection in their words. So far, my favorite character is definitely Jace. I now know how the Twi-hards felt seeing Rob on screen for the first time because I cannot tell you how excited I am that my most current Hollywood crush, Jamie Campbell Bower (from my beloved, Sweeney Todd), is playing Jace in the film that's coming out. I will be one of the first with a ticket. Mhm!
Speaking of films, lately, there have been a ton of good ones coming out. First, this year I fell for Oblivion, which is an awesome sci-fi adventure, and my new favorite is Pacific Rim, which I really didn't think I would love near as much as I did. I will have to get it when it comes out. The last film I saw was The Wolverine, which was really great. Again, I didn't think I would like it because I have slept through literally EVERY SINGLE X-MEN MOVIE I'VE EVER TRIED TO WATCH. I really don't know why that is, but it's true. (Though if you ask me who my favorite one is, it's still Rogue.)
Anyway, I've rambled enough. Here's the link to my Goodreads if you're on there and want to friend me or see what I've read.:
Hope you guys are still enjoying my blog and have a very good day! <(*^*)> <3

Viva Las Vegas! ~ Lex Marie's Return from Vacation

Sorry this is late to post, but I'm back! My apologies for not letting you guys know where I was going, much less I was going somewhere at all, but hopefully you won't be too upset.

I went to Vegas for the millionth time!!

Viva Las Vegas
I'm sure I sound spoiled when I say I've been to Las Vegas so many times I know my way around some of the hotels like I own them. Of course I'm exaggerating just a bit, but I really love visiting Vegas and the moment I walk off the plane I can just smell exactly where I am. (The airport in Vegas smells slightly of cinnamon and something else I can't put my finger on.)
This time around, I was there for a conference event that my mom was a part of. She's become really into hypnotherapy and it ties well with her job, so this was an important weekend for her. We got in Wednesday and our arrival was nothing if not fabulous. First off, my mom treated me to Criss Angel Believe tickets for the next evening (I was a huge CA fan when I was younger) and we were greeted with, not a shuttle bus to the hotel, but a limo! For some reason, the bus wasn't able to pick us up, so we rode in a beautiful black car with A/C and leather interior instead! *0* Very happy accident.
We got to The Orleans, unpacked our toiletries, went downstairs for dinner and wandered the hotel looking at where the hypnotism event would be held. The Orleans is deceivingly huge, even though the casino area makes it look so small. We stayed on the 9th floor and had a big, beautiful, very clean room, so I was in heaven. The only thing was, internet was only free for 24 hours on one device per room, and I don't fully trust hotel internet connections anyway, so that's why I wasn't able to blog. X/ SORRY, GUYS!!

For my fellow cat lovers, we lost $6 to this machine. lol

We had the entire next day, up until the show, to do whatever we wanted, so of course we had to walk the strip. After a buffet breakfast, we went to a few different places, starting with seeing flamingos, black and white swans, and turtles at the Flamingo. We went to all of my favorite hotels and walked through some of the shops. My very first hotel, the MGM Grand, still smells the same way it did when I was little, but I did notice how much oxygen and vanilla they pump into the air this time. (You have to bring your own watch around those parts.) We even made it to the location of the LIGHT club at Mandalay Bay, and sadly, Skrillex wasn't playing until the 22nd, 5 days after I'd return home. T^T (Timing... so close... Tickets... so affordable...)

Regardless, I also got to see some costume pieces from the famous Michael Jackson, (may he rest in peace). It was humbling, to be honest. I'm not really a sucker for celebrities, but I do know how to respect legacy when I see it. I also got to see quartz crystal clusters larger than my torso that were over 180 million years old. Crazy! As if that weren't enough, I got to see the costumes of the Jabbawockeez, who I really enjoy watching.

These were crystal encrusted.

The beading on this was IMPECCABLE.

Such a cool entrance.

Jabbawockeez!!

What's weird was this reminded me of a dream I had about a war in a warehouse. Don't ask. lol

Those are all floors with tons of rooms on them.

We got to walk around a bit on our way back to the Luxor, visiting more shops like Lick, which is too adorable and dirty in a witty way, I loved it. My mom bought us a pack of Chuckles to share. I wanted so badly to stop in the Minus5 Ice Lounge, but by that time, we didn't even have time to get back to the hotel to change our clothes, so instead, we got a frosty drink in a 2' tall plastic cup.

This dress was pretty fun. It was a high-low.

This reminded me of Giger, I loved it.

We got to the show 30 minutes prior to showtime, so the line took no time at all. We had some of the best seats in the house, where we could see the whole stage and the acoustics were best. However, one thing I'd left at the hotel were my glasses, so unfortunately, I can't say my vision was at its best. Luckily, one of my mom's lenses in her glasses worked for me, so at certain times, she'd let me hold them up to my eyes. Let me just say, the man still has some incredible abs. Although, the show wasn't as great as we'd expected, to be honest. Too much self-advertising and comedy, not enough illusions. But at the end of the day, I still got to see Criss Angel's beautiful abs live. Also got to see some costumes from older shows, so that was great. :)

Ladies, you're welcome.

After that day, we were totally beat. The next morning was time to start working the booth while my mom gave a presentation and watched others and took classes. I won't bore you with the boring details, but I will say that I got to meet some wonderful, interesting people, including a group from England who became acquaintances I would speak with at after parties and boring luncheons and dinners. (Ironically, the perfume I chose for this trip was Burberry Brit.) Specifically, I spoke often with Tim Box, who was the guitarist of both The Barbs and What Would Jesus Drive. Super cool individual.

I loved this chandelier.

During most of the event, I wore my corset that attracted a lot of attention and was half the reason I had to show up to all the after parties. Since my mom was gone most of the time and people still wanted to speak with her directly, I stayed close to her at all times, like a red flag. I love wearing it because it realigns my spine (which is why I got it) and it did help me make a better impression on people, but wearing a corset and 5" leopard print wedges attracts the attention of security guards as well, who followed me around almost constantly. It was ok, though. I think after a few days, they picked up on the fact that I was indeed a guest, not a streetwalker. It was funny, though, having men come up and ask me how tall I was without the monstrosities. They didn't always believe me when I said 5'9, but I totally am.

My phone wouldn't stay charged long. lol

These are surprisingly more comfortable than any of the flats I brought.

My last day, I finally got to see my family. My dad's wife picked me up with my two baby brothers in the backseats. The youngest was passed out and the older one managed to on the ride home. It was also nice to see my little brother from Pennsylvania, who I hadn't seen in what has to be close to a decade, now. My dad made two kinds of lasagna, one with sausage, one with beef. I wish I could have taken some home with me, but alas. My grandparents also made it over just in time for dinner. I love my grandparents ridiculously much, but again, it's a rare thing to see them now. I plan to start calling them twice a month, though. After the dinner and a little bit of time with my dad, my grandparents insisted on being the ones to drive me back to my hotel. We spoke about roads and my uncle who lives in an estate outside of London and the differences between homes in Michigan and homes in Vegas. I gave them both kisses as they pulled up to the doors. It's terribly sad each time we part because, after the death of my grandparents on my mom's side last year, (who lived with us), I never know when's the last time I'm going to see or speak to them. I'm so thankful my great grandmother lived to be 98 so I could have great moments with her before she passed. Hopefully my children will have the privilege to know their great grandparents, too.
The plane home on Monday was interesting. Prior to boarding, we witnessed a sip and skip at the bar we ate at and lost money to a slot machine. When we finally got on the plane, we ended up sitting next to an adorable cast member of Green Day's American Idiot. He was wearing a pair of Adidas ObyO x Jeremy Scott Rainbow Hologram Wings, which I told him I'd been pining over. He said, "Yeah, I've never paid $200 for a pair of shoes before, but I just had to have 'em." Every time he would pass out, I'd go into overprotective sister mode. He was just too endearing, like a lost puppy. XD
The return home was bitter sweet. I'd just had such an amazing experience that I'll never forget, so it was something that needed a few days to sink in before I could finish this post. All-in-all, I'm glad I went, and I always learn something when I travel. This time around, I learned the value of time, love, and people. I came back with a drive to work out, pursue my dreams with reckless abandon, and to call my grandparents more often! :3
I hope you all enjoy more posts from me in the realm of fashion, music, and the great joy
of living life.

xx
